viedma: I will rule the world! Emperor Cupcake! (Torcha!)

Last week I was on vacation. It's been years since I had time off and I didn't go anywhere-- it was needed. Not to say that I don't love the driving, but I needed five days to sleep in and do a whole lot of nothing. Vali's Mom got me hooked on sudoku, blast her. Once I found out that it's a deduction game, boom, all I did was drink diet pepsi and play sudoku all morning and listen to Thelonious Monk and listened to the rain fall. It was pretty peaceful, even on Wednesday when the whole area flooded. I barely noticed.

Other things I did on vacation--

In that funny way where light travels slower in my world, I found out that I really love Coldplay, especially Parachutes. It's like Nick Drake decided not to snuff it.

Registered twenty people to vote as part of a 9/11 event I organized at the library and realized I could've done it myself w/o the League of Women Voters. Still, all part of my diabolical plan to take them over someday and make it more progressive, instead of inside the snuggy pantaloons of the dickweed Secretary of State Todd Rokita. Did you know that Indiana Democrats are TOTALLY NOT FAIR to not allow Rokita to purge the rolls of anyone he wants? OMG SO MEAN.

Shopped more than I've done in forever.

Bought a vcr and universal remote for three dollars, and an umbrella for five at the resale shop. That says more than I ever could about technology.

Did one of those trips to Target where you need to pick up just a couple of things you need and it's 100 bucks later and where did the time go? I needed that cute monkey/elephant/snake light switch plate.

Make an exercise room in the basement, complete with stepper, vcr, a stationary bike, and mini relaxing area with retro chair and lamp. Guess which part of the exercise area will get used the most?

That retro chair almost didn't make it home until I remembered Dad's bungee cords. Thanks Dad!

Discovered that Vali and I both lost five pounds in one week. Eating little else except fish and tomato sauce really works.

I did make an exception when I bought a quart of Oberweis butter pecan ice cream I got with a free coupon, because Jim Oberweis is a right wing scumbag. Who makes the best goddamned ice cream on the whole freaking planet! Holy crap. It's like those meth addicts who talk about never being happy again because they can't do drugs anymore.

Switched out the 60W lightbulbs for those high-falutin' 15W flourescents that look like whippy-dip ice cream cones. Reduce my carbon footprint, give a lot of money to GE. You can't win.

Crocheted a bunch of squares. Soon I will have my very own crappy-looking goofyass blanket that you see in "kraft bizarres" and that only I will love.

Read "The Unicorn" by Iris Murdoch and "The Keep" by Jennifer Egan. I liked The Keep better, but The Unicorn was more peculiar and will stick in my head longer. And it wasn't half-bad for something I literally took off the shelf at random and took home to read. I want to read more. One can't read Joyce Carol Oates all your life. Both take place in castles and around castles-- I must be obsessed with sticking a moat around myself.

Trying not to feel guilty about the fact that I hardly comment anymore. I'm becoming more stuck with words, both when I write and when I talk. When I talk or write, I feel like I've got this voice in my ear whispering you're so phony. My inner voice is a thirteen year old goth! So embarassing. Talking more will either help me over my block or make me feel more self-conscious.

Am feeling very glad that sweetie is happy, whole, and healthy. We're now watching Teenagers from Outer Space and squeeing over the whisper-thin Peter Gallagherish cutie patootie.

I got your great postcard! I'm glad you and your sweetie are good; and it's lovely to hear bits of daily life chez Mary.

Thanks! We love getting all of yours. I told Vali she'd better post before Dine really gets worried. (She has a hard time believing lots of people care about her and stuff.)

Monk is a great thing to listen to on a rainy day. Have you seen pictures of him? He always wore these funny little caps. Not like Sun Ra, another jazzman, who is The Original Tinhat, seriously. Glad you had a sweet vacation.

I saw a video of him, it came with one of the library's CDs and I thought it was another music one, and boom it was him. I loved how intense he was and didn't seem to notice the audience at all. And he was cute. :) Thelonious Monk is also good for solving junior jumble. I swear I was stuck on a scrambled word, and five minutes after putting in Monk in Paris I was done.
