Wow... her life would not be worth living without aged ham and steaks? I hope she's alone in that, or I hate to think what the suicide rate will be like as more people have to tighten their food budgets in this recession.

Also, I really hope she's wrong about Veganomicon because I gave it to my newly-vegetarian teenaged niece for Christmas and I would feel awful if it sucked! I am feeling awful pre-emptively, in fact.

I've had it for a year, and I can say on good authority that the OP is full of it. Vali and I have made lovely things out of Veganomicon; it's one of our most-consulted tomes because it has lots of good stuff to make on busy weeknights. The only thing I can think of that's been a bomb was the vegan cholent. I love it, but Vali doesn't like the texture of TVP chunks. I make a batch of that and I've got lunches all week, it's great.

I like where she says not eating meat will doom family farms-- that one's my favorite. ;) It sounds like she likes the taste of meat too much and didn't want to change her palate to accept any other substitutes and is feeling a titch defensive about it.
