"So, Nigel, you and David are back together again, and i hear you have a new single coming out. Can you tell us more about it?"

"Yeah, it's called 'Industrial Grandmother' and it's about the...you know the...what do you call it? Industry of Grandmotherism."

"Industry of Grandmotherism? Like they're wheeling old women on conveyor belts and issuing them sweaters and knitting needles?"

"No knitting needles. I think it's pretty knitting-needle free, actually. We don't really have an opinion about sweater making either, come to think about it. The song is more about the institution of motherhood and how it serves to work to keep little boys down by pinching their cheeks and making them go to church. It's more of a down with patriarchy song, really."

"Matriarchy, you mean. Patriarchy is about men."

"...exactly! But with old women in it instead."

"So this is a more philosophical direction for the band, then?"

"Like philosophy, just not so much of the thinking part."

Sorry, it was a lot funnier in my head when i thought of it a couple of hours ago, but that's what remains after mucking about this afternoon. it's always a lot sillier until you put fingers to keyboard, isn't it? anyway, that's what happens when you watch "Spinal Tap". I was all curious about seeing it again and oh boy oh boy it's incredibly slashy. i think it's time for all fans of Hard Core Logo to dust this one off and play it again because HCL is Spinal Tap after you leave it outside and let all the humor evaporate. except for the conversation in the bar, that is, that was so sweet. and i never realized how incredibly cute Christopher Guest is until now. Cuteness never hurt anyone, that's what i always say.

I think really Vali should do her compare and contrast of ST and HCL that she was threatening to do at Connexions. I think it's a great idea, myself. then the humorless fans who treat HCL like gospel will *shut up*. Some fans have a way of sucking all the joy out of life. They almost did it to me with Due South, but i rallied. I kept reminding myself i like the show and i like the fans on Bindle-- most of the rest of them i'd like to soundly smack into the middle of next week. But you can't let a group of curmudgeons ruin your fun. in anything, whether it be fannish pursuits or the rest of everyday life.

I woke up this morning so rested that i thought i'd slept late. i couldn't believe the clock. Plus it was so bright outside...spring is definitely coming back. I'm ambivalent about it, really. thought i'd get a lot more snow days and would be able to slough off more and slack.

Yesterday i thought i was going quietly out of my mind in ESOL class yesterday. Not because of them, just that i'm trying to teach three separate classes all at once and i feel like i'm leaving everyone shortchanged. I jumpstart the more advanced beginners, get them to a part where they can work on their own, then run to the more beginner beginners and try to get them to a point where they can work on their own, and yesterday i got a new student that i didn't know was coming who's VERY beginner beginner, so last night i ran from group to group, and i thought i sucked on all fronts. Thank goodness the volunteers come in on Thursday-- i'm putting them to work like a motherfucker tomorrow night.

I thought today about how my elementary schoolteachers did it with all the reading groups and activities and lessons and managing 30 little kids 7 hours a day, 5 days a week. My god.

Gee, Mary, you're just now realizing that? :-) Not exactly, but here i am feeling like my brain is leaking out of my ears and i only have 12 adult students that meet twice a week for 5 hours total.

But i'm a little more prepared tonight. i went to the college and picked up more materials and some specialized books for some of the students who requested them, so hopefully we'll be all right.
