it only took three days, but I think Vali and I have finally repaid our sleep debt, with interest. You can barely see the dark circles under our eyes. Today we slept till noon and are parked in front of the laptops working on our own little projecty things.

We haven't had three days together in ages and we've thoroughly indulged ourselves.

On Saturday we drove to Valparaiso to go to a Spanish restaurant that Vali had read about called don Quixote. They serve tapas cuisine or something-- lots of appetizers is what I could make out.

We had

cream of zucchini and gazpacho soup
empanadas- a little meat pastry with a figgy taste
fried artichokes
creamy potatoes with garlic
veal kabob

washed down with
cappuccino
coffee
homeade limonade with fruity bits and sprinkled cinnamon

and lovely warm apple cinnamon cake for dessert

All with live harp music. This was A Dining Event, and the weird ass chef that wandered out to every table to urge everyone to suck wine from his goatskin flask was the only part we could've scrapped. We'll just go a little earlier next time. (Blunaris, now that you're back in Hoosier country, you should give yourself a treat.)

I love that Vali loves food and enjoys eating. Now that I'm around more good food and not just slurping down enough calories to get through the day, I enjoy it too. And it really really helps that we both like to work out as well. ;-)

Bye for now-- I've got to work on getting this table just right for the website.

"Lots of appetizers" is about right. Okay, so originally, in bars in Spain, the bartenders would serve drinks with little saucers on top to keep the flies out. Eventually someone decided that it'd be a good idea to serve food on the saucers as well -- tapas. I think the bars in question must have been a little more sophisticated than the average dive here, because the tapas are things like fried artichokes, not peanuts and pretzels.

My boyfriend is a graphic designer. He said that in one class in college, they were supposed to create an identity for a restaurant or club and some girl said that she was going to do a tapas bar. No one knew what that meant, but the word that sounds closest to "tapas," (at least in Oklahoma-talk anyway,) is "topless," so everyone was very confused.

I'm glad the sleep-debt is repaid, and that you've enjoyed 3 days together. aren't holiday weekends the best thing ever?

that tapas restaurant sounds brill - wonder if there's one in this area? I'd kinda like to try it, methinks.

I think you should-- if there are any Spanish restaurants in the area, I'll bet they serve tapas. It was nummy, and because it wasn't a lot per dish, you can sample lots of little things.

This has been a lovely weekend. Glad you've been having a decent weekend as well. :-)

it was a very good (quiet, but good) weekend, and so far this week hasn't been horrid. I'm hoping the trend continues!

It was a nice dining experience because the appetizer-sized portions really are appetizer-sized, not like those frighteningly huge entrees they plunk down in a lot of restaurants that could serve three people, and you can nibble and taste various sorts of things to your heart's content and still have room for dessert. The food being delicious didn't hurt, either. :-)

I'm definitely going to look for a Spanish restaurant in the area - you've sold me on the concept!
