"In his soul, Bond is a charming and bookish lesbian. This inner conflict is the root of his psychosis. Or, yknow, massive brain lesions."-- [livejournal.com profile] annlarimer, explaining the appeal James Bond holds for me. Thus....(*drumroll*)...new default icon! Because I don't have the stomach the heart to find a screencap of Connery in Zardoz and put it on top of that, even though it would make more contextual sense.

That gave me an idea for a panel at MediaWest:

1. James Bond and Doctor Who, let's talk about these two modern British archetypes. (I'm not qualified to do this panel as I don't know enough about either of them to moderate it well, so I'm throwing it out there in case anyone reads this and wants to go for it.)

The second one came to [livejournal.com profile] violetisblue last night and I think it's a winner--

2. "HOW MANY TIMES CAN I SAY NO???" Your friends are trying to pimp you into fandoms that you hate. Discuss coping strategies with similarly aggrieved fans.

I like this one, but it would degenerate into "I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU DON'T LIKE X, ZOMG OPPRESHUN!!" I would have to keep order with a lot of yelling and a bullhorn. But I might like that. Hmmm.

[livejournal.com profile] violetisblue watched me cut open the pink checkerboard cake o' doom this morning, and put all my fears to rest by saying it's lovely. Now I have to figure out who's going to eat it, because most of the pleasure is in the making, not the eating. You guys want to come over, help me out with a slice?

Both your second MediaWest panel idea and your pink checkerboard cake send me into paroxysms of SHEER GLEE!! I have been staving off bandom people (I AM TOO OLD FOR WEEMO BANDS OMG) and fascinated by checkerboard/window/Battenburg cake for ages now!!
From: [identity profile] viedma.livejournal.com
It's really good, the checkerboard cake, and not at all difficult to do. (Time-consuming yes, but not difficult.) I didn't even need a pastry bag the way she said; I just spooned in the batter carefully into the concentric rings without mixing the two batters.

Oh, your icon. I've always loved Moneypenny and Bond together, just for the lovely banter and affection.

re: #2. I love the idea of that panel because I have said no to some fandoms (hello, bandom people on my flist, I'm so sorry, but I really dislike the music and the fandom, even though I still love you) so many damn times that I'm seriously considering putting up some kind of Prohibited On Pain of DEATH signs in my journal.

Also, your cake looks scrumptious.

They are very affectionate. I find that playfulness very sexy.

re #2-- My personal fannish low point was sitting in a con suite while an otherwise nice lady started going AREN'T THEY WONDERFUL DON'T YOU LOVE THEM SAY YOU LOVE THEM and I thought it was absolute shit and I wanted to cry. It was a tense and miserable con. I didn't go to another one for another four years.

That said, I'm not against music fandom exactly. Last year Vali and I had a grand time with another Duran Duran fan and her sister, and I'm curious to go to Sidewinder's panel about bands because i'm sure she has some recs for music that i've never heard.

It's funny because I'm not against music fandom (I mean, seriously, Metallica slasher for years over here), but I just got really irritated when my polite refusals to drink the bandom Kool-Aid were interpreted as squee-harshing and fandom bitter haggery. Beating people about the head with your fandom will not make them want to get into it, folks, life lesson over here.

I just keep staring at the picture of your cake because it looks nummy.

I've seen this happen at MWC panels (including some I've been on), and it's awesome. Awesome!

Dear everybody: If your fandom is that awesome, the awesomeness will speak for itself. Anything beyond, "You wanna try an episode?" "Sure, why not?" will only drive your friends far, far away.

I'm tempted. Could we throw popcorn at one another? ;)

As long as it's not buttered. The hotel hates that.

Now that that's out of the way . . .

I love your panel ideas, even though I have nothing to contribute to the first. I would listen attentively and nod.

I'd also love to go to MediaWest, finally. (That was the first con where my Ex-Friends unceremoniously stood me up. Not that I'm bitter, oh no.) I even have Fridays and Saturdays off now. Are there still spots available?

Glad you got the post card. The Qin army was spectacular, as was China in general.

O.O

O.O

I would love to see you at Mediawest! I emailed you the details earlier, but excitement. spilling over. into public posts! :D I would be so thrilled if you could make it. I might even do that second panel idea so we could be accused of Harshing Squee and other some such slop. Heheh.
From: [identity profile] la-smartie.livejournal.com
I am trying to work this out. I really want to go!

we could be accused of Harshing Squee

I just did this yesterday! My coworkers were SHOCKED and APPALLED when I harshed Tina Fey, The Onion and Sarah Silverman. (I really don't like TF; a little goes a long way as far as the other two. But I was accused of being No Fun, A Feminist and Not Getting It. I've been out of fandom for years, so it was kind of like a flashback.)
From: [identity profile] viedma.livejournal.com
I really don't like Tina Fey

If it's possible to love you any harder, you have to go and do this. I hate Tina Fey with the passion of a thousand white hot suns. SHE IS NOT FUNNY. And I hated seeing her and Sarah Silverman (and some other doofus whose name I don't know) on the cover of a recent Vanity Fair about funny women. Now if Sarah had been giving Tina Fey rabbit ears, that would've been cute.

Isn't it weird, that when we don't find something funny, then it's always our fault? I wonder if the same logic could work for home or car repair. "Ma'am, if you don't think winding masking tape around a faucet will fix it, then that's your problem, lady."

Did you get my email about Mediawest? I got a delivery failure notification, but I sent it to a couple of different addresses.
